Having a good and comprehensive casino glossary available will ultimately improve the casino gaming experience of any player. Knowing the gambling lingo will provide players with an advantage which will ultimately put them on the road to playing like a pro.

Below is a casino glossary for relevant online casino games. The glossary includes different types of bets, terminology, jargon, and slang. It’s everything a new or veteran player will find useful.

Blackjack Symbol

  • Bankroll: This is the money that a player has specifically set aside for a game of blackjack. As a gambler, it is extremely important manage one's bankroll effectively.
  • Blackjack Hand: This is considered to be the ultimate winning hand in a game of blackjack. This hand consists of two cards: an ace and any other card that has a value of 10. The total value of this hand is 21.
  • Blackjack Strategy: This is the basic skill and knowledge that is required in order to be a proficient blackjack player.
  • Bet: Refers to the amount a player is willing to wager on a hand during a game of blackjack.
  • Bet Spread: Represents the ratio between the minimum and maximum amounts a player has wagered.
  • Bust: Refers to a hand going over the value of 21. When a player goes ‘bust’ they essentially lose the hand.
  • Bust Card: This refers to the card that takes the value of a hand over 21.
  • Card Counting: Refers to a system that is supposed to help players win at blackjack more regularly. Card counting means that players mentally keep track of cards that have already been dealt in order to have a more accurate idea of what the remaining cards are and therefore what the odds are.
  • Chips: When playing at a casino players will not gamble with physical money. A player would typically deposit money into their account and receive an amount of chips or tokens with which to gamble at a blackjack table.
  • Dealer: This term is used to refer to the person who deals the cards out to players during a game of blackjack. At a casino this person would typically be a casino employee. At an online casino, this person would usually be invisible depending on which variant of online blackjack is played.
  • Double Down: This option allows the player to take one more card from the dealer and is only offered for the first two cards in a hand.
  • Edge: Refers to the advantage the house or player has in a game of blackjack.
  • Expose: Refers to turning a card face-up so that its value is made visible to all.
  • Face Cards: Face cards refer to cards that have faces on them. This could be a Jack, Queen or King. There are a total of 12 face cards in a standard deck of cards.
  • Flat Bet: Refers to a wager that is the same amount of money and is made on all hands.
  • Hard Total: This term refers to a hand that has an Ace card but its value is not counted as 11.
  • Hit: Is the option or action a player can take when they want to ask the dealer for another card.
  • Hole Card: This is one of the dealer’s cards and its value remains hidden until all the hands have been completed.
  • Martingale System: This is a popular system used in the game of blackjack. The Martingale System revolves around the idea of the player doubling their bet after each loss so that they ultimately recover all their losses.
  • Natural: This is another term that is used for a blackjack hand. The hand would typically consist of an Ace and another card that has the value of 10.
  • Pair: Refers to a hand that includes two cards that have the same value.
  • Push: This is similar to a tie and occurs when both the dealer and the player have hands that have the same value.
  • Shoe: This is a term used to refer to a device that holds the cards that haven’t been dealt.
  • Soft Hand: A hand that includes an Ace card where the value of the Ace card is counted as 11 and not as 1.
  • Split: This is an option where the player is allowed to split two cards of equal value and play them as separate hands. However, when a hand is split the player must match the original bet made for the second hand. Only the player has the option to split a hand.
  • Stand: An option where the player can choose to remain put and not take any additional cards for the remainder of that hand.
  • Surrender: With this option the player can choose to quit the game and will receive only half their bet. It is a good idea to surrender if the hand you are dealt has a poor chance of winning.

Online Roulette Glossary

  • American Wheel: Refers to a type of roulette wheel. The American roulette wheel includes 38 numbered slots which include the “0” and “00” slots. Numbers on this wheel range from 1-36.
  • Backtrack: Refers to the outer part of the roulette table. This is the area of the table where the ball spins before it rests in a numbered slot or pocket.
  • Biased Numbers: Refers to numbers on the roulette wheel that the ball most frequently lands in more than usual. Biased numbers are usually the product of a biased wheel.
  • Biased Wheel: A roulette wheel that is defective and will therefore produce biased results in a game of roulette.
  • Black Bet: This refers to a bet that is made on the probability of the ball resting on a black numbered slot in the roulette wheel.
  • Column Bet: There are three columns on the roulette table. A column bet is bet made on 12 numbers which are grouped together by the three columns.
  • Combination Bet: Refers to a bet that allows the player to use chips that are in the same position to make a bet on more than one number at the same time.
  • Corner Bet: Refers to a bet that can be made on one of the four numbers located in the four corners of the roulette table. This be has a payout ratio of 8:1.
  • Croupier: This term refers to the dealer at a roulette table.
  • Double Zero: Refers to the “00” slot in a roulette wheel. This slot will only appear on the American version of the game.
  • Dozen Bet: Refers to a bet that can be placed on a collection of twelve numbers. These numbers can range between 1 and 12, 13 and 24, and 25 and 36.
  • En Prison Rule: The En Prison Rule applies to even-money bets. It gives the player two choices. The player can choose to forfeit half their bet or let it ride for another spin.
  • European Wheel: Is also known as a French Wheel. The European Wheel only has a “0” slot instead of both the “0” and “00” slots.
  • Even Bet: An even bet is a bet made on an even number and has a payout ratio of 1:1.
  • Fist Four Bet: This is a bat made on the first four numbers: 0, 1, 2, and 3. The bet is made by placing chips on these numbers which are located on the outer area of the roulette table.
  • Five Number Bet: Also known as a Special Line bet. It allows players to bet on the first five numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 at the same time. Because the “00” is available in this bet, it means that the bet is only available in the American version of roulette.
  • Green Numbers: A term that refers to the “0” and “00”.
  • High Bet: Refers to a bet that is placed on the highest 18 numbers on a roulette wheel. These numbers are between 19 and 36. The bet is an Even Money bet.
  • House Edge: Refers to the percentage advantage that a casino has over players.
  • Line Bet: A bet made on six numbers located side-by-side on the roulette table. The Line Bet has a payout ratio of 5:1.
  • Low Bet: This is a counterpart bet to the High Bet. The difference is that this bet is made on the 18 lowest numbers in a roulette wheel. These numbers are between 1 and 18. A Low Bet is an even money bet.
  • Martingale System: A popular betting strategy system in the game of roulette. Players are encouraged to double a bet after each big loss in order to attempt to regain most or all of one’s loss.
  • Neighbour Bet: Refers to a bet that is made on a single number but also on the numbers that are on either side of it.
  • Odd Bet: Refers to a bet made on the odd numbers on the roulette table. This is an even money bet.
  • Orphan Bet: This is a wager that is common is French Roulette and is made on three numbers. These numbers are close together on the roulette wheel but are far apart on the roulette table. The numbers are 6, 34, and 17.
  • Outside Bet: This is a bet that does not include betting on numbers. Outside bets are located on the outer area of the roulette table and include betting on the following: red, black, high, low, odd or even.
  • Red Bet: This is a bet that is placed on any of the red numbers. It is an even money bet and therefore has a payout ratio of 1:1.
  • Six-Number-Bet: Refers to a bet that covers six inside numbers at the same time.
  • Split Bet: Refers to a bet that covers two numbers that are next to each other on the roulette table. This is also an Inside bet.
  • Square Bet: Refers to a bet that covers four numbers that are in a square on the roulette table. The Square bet has a payout ratio of 8:1.
  • Straight Bet: This is a bet on a single number and it has a payout ratio of 35:1.
  • Straight Up bet: A bet on a single number that is between 0 and 36.
  • Street Bet: This is a bet made on three numbers that are located in a horizontal line on the roulette table. If this bet wins it will payout 11:1.
  • Tier du Cylindre: This bet is only available in the French variation of roulette. This is a bet made on twelve numbers that are located on the opposite side of the 0 on the roulette table.
  • Zero Row: Refers to the part of the roulette table where the “0” and “00” are located.
  • Zero Bet: This is a bet made on the “0” and it has a payout ratio of 35:1.

  • Action: A term used to refer to the total amount of time a player has spent playing slots (can either be online or at a land-based casino).
  • All Ways: Refers to the amount of ways a player is able to win on a slots game. It is commonly used with reference to slot games that use the Ways format: 243 or 1024 Ways.
  • Bankroll: This is the money a player has budgeted to play slots.
  • Bet Max: This term refers to the maximum amount of credits/coins a player is able to wager on per spin. This amount will vary from slot machine to slot machine.
  • Bonus Feature: This is an additional special feature or prize on top of the base game.
  • Cascading Wins: This is a feature whereby once a winning combination has been hit the symbols are replaced with new ones for a second possible winning combination.
  • Certified Slots: These are slot games that have been certified for a payout percentage.
  • Coins per Line: Refers to minimum and maximum amount a player can wager per line in an online slot with multiple lines.
  • Coins per Spin: This term refers to the amount of coins a player chooses to wager per spin in a slot game.
  • Coin Size: The coin size refers to the amount of money that a players pays for a credit. Slot games have a minimum and maximum coin size.
  • Cold Slots/Cold Machine: Refers to slot games that do not payout too often.
  • Double Up: This is a feature that only some online slots offer and is also known as the Gamble Feature. After a winning combination is hit, the player has the option to double their winnings with the Gamble Feature.
  • Expanding Wild: Only some slots will have the expanding wild feature. Expanding wilds will expand across a reel and will increase a player’s chances of hitting a winning combination.
  • Fixed Value Pokies: These are slots that have a set coin size and a set amount that a player is able to wager per spin.
  • Hit Frequency: Refers to the rate that an online slot pays out on average.
  • Hot Slots: Opposite of Cold Slots. Refers to an online slot that pays out frequently.
  • Jackpot: Refers to the maximum amount that a player is able to win on an online slot. Jackpot amounts on an online slot can differ during the base game and a free spins round.
  • Line Bet: Refers to an active payline on an online slot with more than one payline. This is the wager a player makes during a spin.
  • Multiplier: This is a feature available in some online slot games. This feature can multiply a player’s winnings. Multiplier amounts can vary.
  • Progressive Jackpot: The jackpot on a progressive slot is one that continuously grows with each wager made by players. Progressive jackpots can be linked across multiple machines. Once the jackpot has been hit this amount will reset.
  • Payline: This term is used to refer to the horizontal line of symbols on an online slot. There can be more than one payline in an online slot.
  • Payout: This is the amount a player receives after he/she has finished playing and chooses to collect their winnings.
  • Paytable: This is a table or chart that indicates what the payouts are for the different winning combinations in an online slot.
  • Reels: These are the discs that spin vertically. Reels have symbols on them and online slots are usually categorized between 3 and 5 reel slots.
  • Random Number Generator (RNG): A RNG is a software designed to ensure that numbers and outcomes are completely random and fair.
  • Scatter: Refers to a special symbol in an online slot. The Scatter Symbol will help the player unlock bonus features and special rewards.
  • Sticky Wild: This refers to a special wild feature where the Wild Symbol is able to remain stuck in one position until the end of spin. This feature has the potential to increase the possibility of hitting a winning combination.
  • Video Slot: This is a slot game that does not have any physical reels. Rather, the reels are displayed on a monitor or screen.
  • Wild: A high valued symbol in slot games. The wild symbol has the ability to replace all other symbols on the reels except for the Scatter Symbol. It will increase a player’s chances of hitting a winning combination.

  • Aces: This is a bet made on the probability of landing two Aces on the next roll of the dice.
  • Any Craps: A bet made on the probability that the next roll will be either a 2, 3, or12. This bet has a payout ratio of 7:1.
  • Any 7: A type of wager made on the probability of the next roll being 7. The payout ratio on this bet is 4:1.
  • Back Line: This is another term used to refer to the “Don’t Pass Line”.
  • Betting Right: This is a wager that is made on the probability that the dice will win on the “Pass Line” and “Don’t Come” bets.
  • Betting Wrong: This is a bet made on the probability that the dice will not pass on the “Don’t Pass Line” and “Don’t Come” bets.
  • Big 6: A wager that is placed on the probability of 6 being rolled before a 7. It is also an even money bet which pays the payout ratio is 1:1.
  • Big 8: This is a wager that is made on the probability of an 8 being rolled before a 7. It has a payout ratio of 1:1 and is an even money bet.
  • Box Car: A wager that is made on the possibility of 12 being rolled.
  • Buy Bets: This is a wager made on the probability of a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 landing before a 7. It’s an even money bet that has a payout ratio of 1:1. This type of wager usually involves an agreement between the player and the casino, whereby the player pays a 5% commission to the house/casino.
  • Big Red: This is a wager made on the probability of the outcome of a 7 on the next roll.
  • Centre Bets: These are wagers made in the centre of the craps table.
  • Come Out Roll: Refers to the very first roll of the dice in a game of craps.
  • Come Bet: This is a type of wager that is usually made after the “Come Out Roll” and is similar to the “Pass Line Bet”.
  • Don’t Come Bet: This is a bet that is made after the “Come Out Roll” and is made against the dice.
  • Don’t Pass Bet: A bet that is made before the “Come Out Roll”. It’s a bet made on the possibility of the “Come Out Roll” being either a 2, 3, or 12.
  • Double Odds: This is a wager where the player has the option to double the amount on the original wager made.
  • Even Money: This term is used to distinguish bets that have a payout ratio of 1:1.

  • Line Bet: This can either be a wager that is made on the “Pass Line” or “Don’t Pass Line”.
  • Max Bet: Refers to the maximum amount a player is able to wager.
  • Minimum Bet: Refers to the minimum amount a player is able to wager.
  • Pass Line Bet: This is a wager made on the possibility of the dice passing and that the “Come Out Roll” is either a 7 or 11.
  • Place Bet: A wager made on the probability of a 7 being rolled before a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled.
  • Point: This term is used to refer to the number that is established during the “Come Out Roll”. This number can be 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10.
  • Proposition Bet: Also known as a centre Bet. This is wager is placed on the centre of the craps table.
  • Shooter: A term used to refer to the person who is rolling the dice in a game of craps.
  • Single Roll Bet: A wager that is made on a single-roll of the dice.

  • Action: Refers to the total amount of money a player wagers during a game of Video Poker.
  • Average Payout: Refers to the average amount of money a player is able to win while playing a video poker game over a certain period of time.
  • Bet Max: Refers to the maximum amount a player is able to bet on a hand during a game of video poker.
  • Cash Out: Once a player is done playing an online video poker they can choose to “Cash Out” and convert their winnings into cash and have it deposited into their account.
  • Complete Hand: A term used to refer to a hand that has all the cards needed for a winning combination.
  • Deuce: Refers to a 2-value card which can also act as a joker or wild card in certain games of online video poker.
  • Discard: The act of getting rid of an unwanted or unneeded card from your hand during a game of video poker.
  • Draw: This is the act of drawing new cards to replace the one’s the payer has chosen to discard.
  • Face Card: Refers to either a Jack, Queen, or King in standard deck of cards.
  • Flush: Refers to one of the winning combination hands in video poker. A Flush is a hand that includes 5 cards that are all of the same suite.
  • Four of a Kind: Also known as Quads. This is combinations of four cards that have the same value and are each from a different suit.
  • Full House: Refers to a combination of five cards in a video poker hand. This hand consists of three cards that are of the same value and a pair.
  • High Card: Refers to a card that has the highest value in a video poker hand. These are commonly used to refer to face cards as well as the Ace card.
  • Multi-Hand: Refers to a variation of online video poker where the player is able to play more than one hand in a game.
  • Payout Schedule: This is a table that details information of what winning hand combinations look like and what their various payouts are.
  • Progressive Jackpot: This is a jackpot that will continuously grow until it is hit and will then reset. A progressive jackpot is not a fixed jackpot and so it varies in the maximum amount a player is able to win.
  • Royal Flush: A winning video poker hand that consist of a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace that are all of the same suit.
  • Straight: A winning hand combination that consists of five cards that are in the same sequence but are not all of the same suit.
  • Straight Flush: This hand consists of five cards that are in the same sequence and are also of the same suit.
  • Three of a Kind: A hand that includes three cards that are all of the same value and is also referred to as “trips”.
  • Wild Card: Can also be called a joker card. This card can substitute any of the other cards in a hand in a game of video poker.
